Riverside and Vander Zanden Apartments
Riverside South Hall
Location: Between Fox River and Former First Street
Architects: Wausa Homes Inc., Bohm Builders Inc.
Cost: $289,000
Although Wausau Homes has been building similar units for the general public since 1965, this is the first time a structure of this nature was utilized as a dormitory. The twelve-unit brick structure accommodates 48 students. Each of the units is fully furnished and includes its own thermostat, bath facilities, bed and living room.
Built along the west bank of the Fox River, the complex was begun in May 1979 and became available for student use in September that year. The hall was built to relieve some of the student-housing pressure on campus.
The Hall is used in the summer as rental units for visitorys to the area.
John J. Vander Zanden Hall
Location: South of Reid Street facing the Fox River
Architects: DeCoster Construction Company
Cost: Approximately $303,186
In dedication ceremonies on September 25, 1982, the Riverside North Apartments were renamed the John J. Vander Zanden Hall. The student residence had originally been completed in 1980 and named Riverside North at that time. Members of the Vander Zanden family, Fort Howard Foundation officials, and guests were at the ceremony.
A $250,000 grant from Fort Howard Paper Foundation in honor of the late John Vander Zanden, a past member of the Foundation's Board of Directors, was awarded to St. Norbert College to underwrite the cost of the apartment complex.
The hall houses 46 students who must achieve high academic standards to live in the building. Each apartment has two bedrooms, a bath, living room, small dinette and fully equipped kitchen.
Increased demand for on-campus housing to improve student retention were factors in construction of the hall.
